Questions About Karate Classes in Austin? We've Got Answers.
The most common questions people ask before their first class. Still have something on your mind? Call 512-327-2900
Is karate Japanese or Chinese?
Karate are Japanese in origin. The word ‘karate’ translates to ’empty hand,’ reflecting its focus on striking techniques using the body rather than weapons. It was formalized in Okinawa, Japan, in the early 20th century before spreading worldwide.
What is karate?
Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art that emphasizes striking techniques — punches, kicks, knee strikes, and open-hand moves — alongside mental discipline, respect, and self-control. Our Karate trainings build both physical capability and strong character values.
What are the main principles of karate?
What is the difference between karate lessons and taekwondo?
What is better, Jiu Jitsu or karate?
Neither is universally “better” — they simply develop different skills. Karate focuses more on stand-up movement, striking, discipline, focus, and character development. Jiu Jitsu emphasizes ground movement, escapes, control, joint locks, and submissions.
At Life Ki-do, we don’t believe families should have to choose just one. Our classes blend the best of Karate and Jiu Jitsu with practical self-defense and personal development, helping students build confidence, fitness, safety skills, calm focus, and strength both standing and on the ground.
What are the different styles of karate?
The most widely practiced karate styles include Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, Shito-Ryu, Wado-Ryu, and Kyokushin. Each style has its own emphasis — some prioritize strong linear techniques, others flowing circular movements. Our karate program draws from time-tested traditional methods adapted for all ages and skill levels.
How long does it take to progress through the Karate belts?
Progression depends on attendance and individual effort. At our Austin Karate school, students can typically earn their first belt within about 1 month of consistent training. The path to black belt is individual but on average it takes approximately 10 years to become experts in the striking and grappling arts. Every milestone along the way is celebrated and meaningful.
What should a beginner expect in their first karate lessons?
Your first karate lessons will be relaxed and welcoming. You will be guided through basic stances, simple techniques, and the general format of a class — all at a comfortable pace. No experience is required, and our instructors make sure every new student feels supported from the moment they step onto the mat.
Does karate focus more on striking or grappling?
What equipment or uniform is required for karate?
For your first trial class, all you need is comfortable athletic clothing. Once you enroll, you will receive your Life Ki-do Karate uniform, which includes. your gi pants, Life KI-do T-shirt, and Karate belt.
